Application modernization

Application modernization requires reliability (capacity planning, constant monitoring, AI automation, and zero-trust security) and a consistent experience across multiple devices through user-centered design, usability testing, and optimization for mobile screens.

Nowadays, our dependence on microcomputers and the Internet is similar to that of electricity: we can no longer live without them. Given that our relationship with devices and their respective applications is becoming increasingly necessary for our way of life, we will need the systems we currently use to be increasingly capable. For most of them, it will be necessary to undergo a process ofapplication modernization.

Given the speed brought about by the Internet and the performance offered bythe artificial neural networksthat make upartificial intelligence agents, we have become accustomed to interacting with systems that are capable of quickly processing large volumes of data with virtually no errors, in addition to offering a fluid experience for the user regardless of the device through which they are accessed. This is the level ofqualitywe demand fromapplications, and only modern ones can offer us so much.

Developing new digital products or redesigning a solution that continues to meet or exceed user expectations is no small feat. In this article, we’ll highlight how we approach the most critical aspects ofapplication modernization projects. Join us!

Non-negotiable fundamentals: reliability and safety

“Data is the new oil.” The phrase, which is the title ofClive Humby’sspeech at the 2006 annual conference of theAssociation ofAmericanAdvertisers, has gained fame in different business contexts.

For decades, corporations have had to work with large volumes of data to analyze scenarios and make decisions based on them. However, in the current scenario, the amount of data is often greater than it was decades ago—and will continue to increase—with markets becoming increasingly competitive. Therefore, assertive decision-making is crucial for the future of a company. And in order to make the right decisions, we need to trust the numbers that software presents us with.

Modern applicationsmust therefore interact with massive amounts of data and process them quickly, all without compromising stability. Here at Inmetrics, one of the first steps in developing digital products that meet these standards is to plan the application’s capacity. This ensures that the system has sufficient resources to handle expected demand, preventing overloads and performance degradation.

Once we know what and how much resources the system will require, we plan all of its future monitoring. Yes, the application's operation already generates a large amount of data. By constantly observing this data, we are able to anticipate problems, preventing them from affecting users.

Comprehensive monitoring also allows us to quickly identify possibleautomationsthat can be implemented. With them, we reduce the likelihood of errors and resource consumption. Currently, there are alreadyapplicationswithartificial intelligencethat help us identify repetitive tasks that can be automated.

Even when we are certain that best practices have been implemented in development, we only fully trust systems if we believe that the data is secure. To ensure security, here at Inmetrics we operate with a zero trust approach: by default, each user and device is explicitly verified before being granted access to the application.

Modernization of applications: consistent experiences on any device

Every day, we carry small, powerful computers in our pockets, bags, wrists, and hands, filled with applications that are completely integrated into our daily lives. Thanks to them, we perform various tasks in our daily routine, both in our personal and professional lives.

Currently, the ability to function on different devices, contexts, and screen formats is one of the most sought-after attributes in systems. Therefore, inapplication modernization processes, we focus our energy on imagining all possible future scenarios for using the program. We do this with a design approach centered on the total user experience.

To understand it, we analyzed a lot of data. That's how we understand user behavior when faced with possible interfaces—whether they be the screen, mouse, keyboard, or hand, in the case of tactile devices.

Next, the consistency of the application's operation: given certain user behavior, how does the application respond: is it a notification on the screen, a vibration of the mobile device, an audible signal...? How does the application act to make the user experience as fluid as possible? To answer these questions, we conduct several usabilitytests, often in controlled environments when the applications are still at the prototype stage.

In virtually all cases, the screen is the main interface for interacting with applications. To ensure a pleasant experience on different devices, we prototyped the display for multiple screen sizes from the earliest versions of the layout and tested them under different lighting conditions.

It is in the context of frequent access on mobile devices that the two dimensions ofapplicationmodernization processes—reliability and user experience—come together.Smartphonesand tablets typically have less computing power thandesktops. In addition, in certain locations, the Internet connection is not stable. Therefore, the version of the application that will be accessed by mobile devices must be built in a way that optimizes resource consumption.

All the different perspectives we’ve mentioned are essential for carrying outapplicationmodernization processes that deliver real value to companies. In this way, during the actual system development phase, we minimize the likelihood of errors. This is the foundation of Inmetrics’ quality engineering; it is how, by solving relevant problems through our digital experiences, we make an impact on businesses and people.
