Five steps to adapt your company to the CNPJ change

Starting in July 2026, new CNPJs will be alphanumeric, requiring system adaptation in five steps: intelligent discovery, planning, metric definition, automated implementation with AI, and approval with official Federal Revenue Service tests.

A change that has been planned by the Federal Revenue Service since 2022 and was announced throughNormative Instruction 2,229, published on October 15, 2024, is getting closer to happening: the change ofthe CNPJ to the alphanumeric model. If you want to get ahead of the change, follow along with us in this text to understand the five steps to adapt your company to theCNPJ change.

Starting in July 2026, new CNPJs will be issued in alphanumeric format. The current ones, consisting only of numbers, will remain valid. But to registeralphanumeric CNPJs, systems will need to be adapted—and you can already prepare for the change.

The change to the CNPJis mainly due to the level of formalization of the Brazilian economy, which has grown and will continue to increase, especially since theTax Reform came into effect. With the alphanumeric model, the number of possible CNPJ combinations jumps from 100 million to almost 3 billion, allowing a greater number of legal entities to formally coexist in the country's business environment.

The change has a direct impact on companies' routines, especially with regard to information processing.Application modernizationprojects will need to be carried out so that they can read the new alphanumeric model, with special attention to the data present oninvoices.

To ensure you get yourapplications right, here are five steps to adapt your company tothe CNPJ change:

  1. Smart discovery
  2. Plan development
  3. Establishment of metrics and indicators
  4. Implementation
  5. Approval, testing, and support

Start with the plan

Every effectiveapplication modernizationproject begins with planning—and plans that work start with a good diagnosis. The plan does not need to be very extensive or detailed, but it should be sufficient to clearly present the level of effort that will be required during the execution stages.

1) Smart discovery

The first part, therefore, is the diagnosis ofapplications. Here at Inmetrics, we call this first step Intelligent Discovery. It is the stage in which we identify and map where the CNPJ is used, in all dimensions of itsapplications—in databases, backend, frontend, and integrations.

At this stage, we perform a complete analysis of the databases, scan thebackend, conduct a detailed audit ofthe frontend, and identify external integrations. The challenge is to make the diagnosis as comprehensive as possible, analyzing thequalityof the currentapplication documentation, with special attention to both the connections between databases and the hidden dependencies between systems.

2) Plan development

Once the diagnosis is complete, we move on to the second step: building the plan. We identify the criticality of the changes in order to prioritize them appropriately, always taking care to link them in a way that does not cause breaks or stoppages in the applications.

3) Establishment of metrics and indicators

At the end of the plan's construction, the third step is taken: establishing metrics and indicators that will be tracked to monitor and evaluate the process's progress. Comprehensive monitoring allows for the quick identification of potential bottlenecks, reducing the need to redo deliveries and, consequently, increasing the team's speed.

4) Implementation

In the fourth step, we implement all necessary changes. At this stage, our advancedartificial intelligencewill be used more extensively to ensure that themodernization of applicationsoccurs appropriately and quickly.

During the implementation phase, we perform automated code modifications, update validations and masks, adjust APIs and integrations, and have already conducted sometests, mainly those that useautomation routines. At this stage, diagnosis is valuable: it indicates rigid input masks, integrations through external APIs, and the feasibility of compatibility with older systems.

5) Approval

Once implementation is complete, we move on to the fifth and final step: the acceptance testing phase. Our expertise in Quality Engineering—as evidenced by our status as a leading company in Continuous Testing on the ISG Provider Lens™️ Next-Gen ADM Services Brazil 2022—gives you even greater peace of mind during the acceptance testing phase.

We validateapplicationsin the official Federal Revenue Service environment with a certificate of compliance. We ensure that everything works perfectly before the mandatory deadline through comprehensivetestingwith real data—and of course, you will have full support at the end of the fifth step.

Our team is fully focused on providing our solution, generating value for your company and reducing the financial and tax risks of your operation. This way, you can rest assured about the possible technical complexities of compliance.
